Christopher Nolan's mythic action epic, The Odyssey, is a film audiences have been anticipating since its announcement. It easily ranks as one of the most awaited motion pictures coming next year. As a pre-Christmas treat, a trailer has finally arrived, even if it's compromised by YouTube's poor compression—maybe illustrating the director's choice to restrict the trailer solely for theatrical audiences.
The Initial Look of the Stellar Ensemble
This first look reveals Matt Damon in the role of Odysseus. We also see Tom Holland as Telemachus alongside Anne Hathaway as Penelope. In a poignant moment, Penelope asks her husband to vow his safe homecoming, to which he respond by asking what occurs should he fail. The trailer also offers a brief, shadowy glimpse of the mythical one-eyed giant, from whom sheep are Odysseus and his crew steal during their arduous journey.
Based upon a cornerstone in classic storytelling, The Odyssey follows the lengthy quest undertaken by the famed ruler. Following his victory at Troy, which is depicted in Homer's Iliad, the king faces a long and perilous road home.
Mythical Encounters and a Star-Studded Lineup
Along his path, Odysseus confronts countless challenges and legendary creatures. This roster features the enchantress Circe, who transforms men into swine, and the deceptive Sirens. Regardless of these ordeals, Odysseus vows to overcome anything to reunite with his wife and son on his home island.
The adaptation's cast boasts an impressive lineup. Alongside the leading trio are Charlize Theron as the cunning Circe, together with Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Elliot Page, and Jon Bernthal.
A Tale of Many Adaptations
Homer's epic has inspired numerous adaptations throughout history. These range from contemporary versions to a 1999 ballet. There has even been a stage musical adaptation titled Epic: The Musical, presented as a multi-part album series.
The official trailer has been highly anticipated following the project's reveal and a brief teaser which was initially shown only on the big screen. That footage later made its way onto the internet soon after.
