Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was convicted of planning a military coup in September and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" were revealed.

This encompassed attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.

In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a senator, called for a assembly of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also requested that the former president be authorized to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was convicted of heading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which encompassed plans to assassinate Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the support of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, many his followers stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, Brasília.

The security forces intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been provoked by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, restore order and return him to office.

At the time, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 national vote.
