Matteo Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Haywire Lazio

The mood at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had let in a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.

A Season Unraveling?

Had their campaign falling apart, or was there ever any cohesion maintaining its structure to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, before he publicly stated that the management had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Reports that he might quit were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic during matches as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it has been hard to determine if they are improving or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Surprising Presence

At least one man continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this season. He completed the last one with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, his parent club were attempting to remain there a while longer. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived originally when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances with the club in 2022-23, all but one of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."

Discovering His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to work out the nature of his skill set. Originally described as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
