RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of access tunnels down to the site... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were a great many British personnel deployed over the festive period. This action, to remove militants who threaten our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
